Once known as Decoration Day – which became a federal holiday in 1971 - this day is intended to honor those men and women who gave their lives in active military service to our country ... the ultimate act of "Service Above Self".
Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.
Brian Berg, Jr., president of the Rotary Club of Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates, will serve as the master of ceremonies this year.
Other event participants include the Spring Valley Concert Band; Patrick Higgins bagpiper; honor guards from the Schaumburg & Hoffman Estates public safety departments; American Legion Post 1983 and VFW Post 2202; and volunteers from the various Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates philanthropic organizations, including Schaumburg A.M. Rotary.
